Utmost care should be taken when choosing a coffee table, because it serves as the centerpiece of your living room. If you are remodelling your home, or simply updating your living room furniture, you may also need to update your old coffee table. Contrary to popular belief, choosing the perfect coffee table for your living room is not as easy as heading to the store and buying the first coffee table that you see. Before heading to the furniture store, take some time to determine what kind of coffee table would blend seamlessly with your living room's existing decor. Something as small as a coffee table could ruin that symmetry in an instant. Coffee tables are usually placed 15 inches away from the sofa or couch. This ensures that there is enough space for you to move between the table and the sofa without bumping into anything. As a general rule, coffee tables are usually 16 inches high.  If your living room has a modern or contemporary theme, you can select a coffee table which is slightly lower, about 11 inches high. The coffee table should ideally be the same height as the sofa seat.

If you're looking to add a little elegance and class to your living room, you can choose a traditional or classic coffee table. An oval coffee table with curved legs is a great choice, especially if your couch is heavy or skirted. If your couch has legs, you should choose a more solid-looking coffee table to balance the two. For example, a coffee table with a modern design is normally square or round with few or no intricate details and will look great with sofa's that have legs.

This is pretty much self-explanatory. As the name implies, coffee tables are used for serving tea or coffee. However, in these modern times, the coffee table now serves several different functions. This may be where you have your morning coffee and where you read the newspaper. This may be where your children do their assignments. This may be where your husband will relax and watch TV. If you expect your coffee table to serve these functions and more, you should pick one that is sturdy and can withstand wear and tear.

Upholstered or wooden tables are your best choice. If your coffee table is meant to be merely decorative and will not be frequently used, a coffee table with a walnut surface will add a hint of class and elegance to your living room. If you’re particularly proud of your beautiful carpet, you can show it off by choosing a glass-topped coffee table. Glass-topped coffee tables can also create a feeling of space, making your room appear larger. This is a great choice if you have limited space.
